And just a day later, it was confirmed.
The Athletic's Jeff Howe reports that the Patriots are "preparing QB Bailey Zappe to start Sunday against the Chargers."
The starting job has been Mac Jones' since the start of the season, but the third-year quarterback has now been benched four times. Yet it seems now, instead of getting benched mid-game, Jones is getting benched prior to the game.
Zappe reportedly got the most reps in practice on Wednesday, with Malik Cunningham also getting rotated in. It seems the undrafted rookie can get some opportunities on Sunday.
Will Grier also made his return to practice after being waived and then re-signed to the practice squad, but he along with Jones did not get any reps during the media-attended portion of practice.
If Zappe continues to perform well at practice this week, the starting job appears to be his.
Patriots quarterback plans may have been revealed during Wednesday’s practice
Who knows if this will stick?
