Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle Justin Madubuike is set to hit free agency after this season, as he is currently playing in the final year of his rookie contract.
The Ravens reportedly made a push to sign Madubuike to an extension deal during the offseason.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on his "The Adam Schefter Podcast," the Ravens "put on a press to sign" Madubuike to an extension before the start of the 2023 campaign. The two sides ultimately did not come to terms on such an agreement before the season kicked off because the fourth-year defensive lineman aimed to "bet on himself."
This bet is so far paying off for Madubuike. The former Texas A&M standout has already logged career highs in multiple stats, including in sacks (10.0), which also leads all Ravens players.
Schefter speculated that if the Ravens fail to re-sign Madubuike, then "they’ll probably have to use their franchise tag" on the defensive tackle. The non-exclusive franchise tag for defensive tackles was set at $18.937 million during the 2023 offseason.
Baltimore reportedly aspires to re-sign Madubuike. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini recently noted that Baltimore "wants to try to keep" the all-around defensive lineman.
Madubuike has recorded 37 quarterback hits and 18.5 sacks in four seasons with the Ravens.
Impressive Jadeveon Clowney stat proves just why Ravens need to extend him
Incredible season.
