FOXBOROUGH, Mass – After getting snaps at quarterback during practice this past week, the New England Patriots decided to elevate Malik Cunningham prior to their matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

And there were reportedly a package of plays they had been working on with him.

Yet, as the game went on, it was Bailey Zappe who continued to come out for each drive while Cunningham was sidelined. The rookie didn't see time in the game at all on Sunday.

With the continued offensive struggles, many wondered why the team decided not to play the mobile and speedy quarterback.

After the game, A to Z Sports spoke with Cunningham, asking if he was aware why he didn't play.

"I mean, I have no idea," Cunningham said. "They told me just stay ready, and I was ready. If my number's called, just be ready to go. That's what I was told."

He also explained how with the increased reps at practice, he "had a feeling" he was going to be elevated to the active roster for the game, but "wasn't sure" until Saturday.

Zappe took the majority of the reps at practice this past week, but Cunningham was rotated in. Because of that, it seemed they were prepared to use him.

But instead, he acted as a backup.

"Yeah, just backup and like I said, just be ready whenever coach tells you to go in," Cunningham said. "My goal is to always be ready for receiver, quarterback. That's how I attack everyday. Just always stay ready."

Belichick was asked about this numerous times during his post-game press conference, but continued to repeat they he did what he thought was best for the team. And it seemed that was to not play Cunningham.

The Patriots have a short week, facing the Pittsburgh Steelers just four days after their loss to the Chargers on Thursday Night Football. It will be interesting if they opt to use another elevation for Cunningham, or if the competition is back to being between Zappe and Mac Jones.

But as he said, he's always ready to go.
