Another week. Another ugly game. Another embarrassing loss. Another quarterback who looks lost. Still zero answers.
The New York Jets lost to the Atlanta Falcons by a final of 13-8 at a rainy MetLife Stadium and the Jets record now falls to a paltry 4-8 on the season.
The story of the game was predictable. The defense played great, hard-nosed football and the offense looked like it would have trouble moving the ball against a middle school junior varsity squad.
The Jets managed just 259 yards of offense, with only 62 of those yards coming on the ground. Tim Boyle started the game for New York and was 14-for-25 passing for 148 yards with one interception before being taken out with 26 seconds left in the third quarter in favor of Trevor Siemian who didn’t fare much better. Siemian finished 5-of-13 for 66 yards. Siemian also had three fumbles, losing one.
The Jets broke a tie with the Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams for the most quarterbacks used since last season. Siemian is New York’s seventh following Chris Streveler, Aaron Rodgers, Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco and Boyle.
Despite the offenses ineptitude the Jets did have a chance to win the game getting the ball with 1:53 left in the game. But after a defensive penalty and a 25 yard completion to Xavier Gipson, the Jets didn’t even cross their own 40-yard line, thus ending the game with a whimper.
“Yeah, it’s frustrating,” Siemian said. “It’s frustrating for everybody. You realize the margin for error in this league is so razor thin that you could have it and it could be so close, and then it could look totally the other way.”
Fans are quick to point the finger for another inept offensive performance to offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, but this one wasn’t his fault. Robert Saleh was asked why the Jets are sticking with Hackett as their play caller, he responded, "I guess you guys will have a better idea when you see the all-22 from this one." Guys were open. Plays were there. Quarterbacks didn’t make them.
And for the rare occurrences where the Jets were able to keep a quarterback upright and that quarterback was able to see an open receiver and make a halfway decent throw to that receiver for a positive play? A penalty.
The Jets had eight penalties in the first half — four in the last 1:55 — for 56 yards, compared to just two calls on the Falcons. Saleh was asked about the officiating, and he wouldn’t take the bait. "I'm done talking about those guys,” Saleh said.
Now the Jets get ready to face a Houston Texans team that is 7-5 with a quarterback that is taking the league by storm after being drafted number two overall in C.J. Stroud. Stroud is what the Jets thought Zach Wilson would be.
Speaking of Zach Wilson, Saleh wouldn’t rule out going back to Wilson as the team’s starting QB going forward. Saleh won’t say who the QB is next week. “I’m not there yet,” Saleh said after the loss. At 4-8, it might not matter anymore.
MetLife Stadium: More NFL players speak up on ‘trash’ turf
Another week, another major injury on the MetLife field turf. This time, it was Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips, who like Aaron Rodgers, tore his Achilles. Phillips was having a great season for a Dolphins defense that was coming into its own and starting to play really well, lately. The turf has been under fire […]
