Former Tennessee Vols head coach Derek Dooley comes from a Georgia Bulldogs family.

Dooley, who was born in Athens, played college football at Virginia before landing at Georgia as a graduate assistant in 1996. That's the only time that Dooley has worked for Georgia, which is where his father, the late Vince Dooley, was a head coach from 1964 to 1988 and the athletic director from 1979 to 2004 (Vince won a national championship at Georgia in 1980).

Georgia football is king in the Dooley family, even though Derek has spent far more time working for Georgia's rivals, such as Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee, than he has for the Bulldogs.

And that's something that's driven Dooley's mother, Barbara, crazy over the years.

It’s awful,” said Barbara to Online Athens ahead of the SEC Championship game last weekend. “What can I say? It’s awful. Derek’s been at Tennessee. Derek’s been at LSU. Now he’s at Alabama. He’s killing my guts. I just decided I’m wearing all red Saturday.”

Dooley has been an analyst for Alabama the last two seasons. But that's not an impressive enough job for Barbara to pull for the Crimson Tide over the Bulldogs.

“You know Vincent would have never gone to an Alabama game,”noted Barbara. “If Derek was maybe the offensive coordinator, but no, not as an analyst, no.”

According to Online Athens, Dooley's mother sat in a box with Kirby Smart's wife for the SEC Championship game.

"It just means more" isn't just a silly tagline for the SEC, it's truly a way of life in the south. And Barbara Dooley's comments about Derek's career certainly show that way of life in action.
