Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy just had a wrench thrown into the biggest week of the season as his team gets ready for the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to a team's press release, McCarthy is set for surgery on Wednesday afternoon after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis on Wednesday morning.
While the Cowboys' coordinators are set to take over practice, McCarthy is expected to be ready to go for Sunday's key divisional showdown.
How exactly will McCarthy be calling plays days removed from what's commonly known as a very painful experience remains to be seen. This is how My Health Alberta defines the recovery timeline after getting your appendix removed:
Your recovery time depends on the type of surgery you had. If you had laparoscopic surgery, you will probably be able to return to work or a normal routine 1 to 3 weeks after surgery. If you had an open surgery, it may take 2 to 4 weeks. If your appendix ruptured, you may have a drain in your incision.
McCarthy is planning on coaching an NFL game within four days!? There's no question it's going to take the head coach digging deep to get through it. Will he be standing in the sidelines as if nothing had happened? Will he need a wheelchair or something?
If he pulls it off, he'll earn that "DAWG" label for the rest of his life.
This might not have been that big of an issue last year, when McCarthy was tasked with game management and a CEO-type role on gameday.
But in 2023, he's been wildly successful as the play-caller of the Cowboys offense. As a result of his skills with the play sheet in his hands, we've seen Dak Prescott's best football ever. Not to mention, CeeDee Lamb's rise and Jake Ferguson's quick ascend.
Hopefully, McCarthy gets well soon for his sake (most importantly) and the Cowboys'.
