The Miami Dolphins defeated the New York Jets by the score of 34-13 on Friday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Tua Tagovailoa went 21/30 passing for 243 yards with a touchdown and 2 interceptions. Raheem Mostert led the Dolphins on the ground with 94 yards on 20 carries and 2 touchdowns. Jaylen Waddle led all Miami pass catchers with 114 receiving yards on 8 catches.
Here's a lot of things I liked and a few that I didn't…
What I liked
– Tua found Tyreek Hill for a 36-yard gain for the game's first big play. Hill limped off and was in obvious pain after being tackled by D.J. Reed. But it set up the Dolphins' first points of the game. He was also able to come back later in the series.
– Screen play to Hill on third-and-2 on the same drive. Miami rolled linemen out in front of Hill, and he took the pass in the backfield for a big gain. A beautiful play call.
– I didn't hate the decision to go for it on fourth-and-2, which failed when Tua and Hill couldn't connect on a fade. The alternative is the Jets backed up at their own 5-yard line with Tim Boyle at QB. That's not a terrible alternative.
– Jaelan Phillips had Boyle wrapped up on the next play, but the latter was able to toss it away and avoid a safety.
– After the Dolphins settled for a 38-yard field goal, the defense answered the bell again, forcing the Jets backwards 7 yards and forcing another punt. The defense started off just as hot as they finished against the Raiders last Sunday.
– The play call to put Miami up 10-0. Hill lined up in the backfield, broke out into the flat, and he had a safety trying to keep him out of the end zone one on one in space. Good luck with that. Juke, missed tackle, touchdown Dolphins. Easy money.
– Phillips read a screen pass on the next drive and tipped it high, which was almost intercepted. It helped lead to a punt after Christian Wilkins dropped Boyle for a sack on third down. Miami's front has been having its way with the Jets' offense in the first half.
– Kader Kohou had a stick on third and two on Breece Hall, which forced a punt and gave the Dolphins one last drive to end the first half. A great individual effort that kept him a yard short of the first down line.
– Wow. What an incredible play by Jevon Holland to end the half. A 99-yard interception return for a touchdown after Boyle's Hail Mary toss came up just short of the goal line. After the Jets had stolen the momentum with a pick six, Holland ripped it right back with one of the highlight plays of the entire league this year.
– Tua threw a dime to Waddle on third down for a 32-yard gain on Miami's first drive of the second half. Simply a clutch pitch and catch that allowed Miami to extend its lead.
– Jason Sanders powered a 55-yard FG through dead center. Given he's been 5 of 15 from 50+ the last three seasons before that kick, that's a good thing to see.
– Wilkins read a play-fake rollout for Boyle, and he crushed the Jets' QB as soon as he turned around to pass. Great recognition by #94.
– Raekwon Davis registered a sack of Boyle after pressure off the edge forced him to step forward into the waiting arms of #98.
– Jerome Baker picked off Boyle on the 17th play of the Jets' fourth quarter drive after it was deflected by Xavien Howard. If the game wasn't already over (it was), that was the backbreaker.
– Mostert broke free for a 34-yard touchdown to stretch the lead back to 21 at 34-13. Connor Williams and Liam Eichenberg did a nice job helping to spring that up the middle.
– Emmanuel Ogbah beat his man for a strip sack. The Dolphins have some good options in Andrew Van Ginkel and Ogbah to replace Phillips the remainder of the year. DaShawn Hand also beat the Jets' left guard easily and racked up Miami's last sack of the game in the final minute. Steady pressure in the second half from Miami's defense.
What I didn't
– The run blocking in the first quarter wasn't great. Aside from an off tackle run by Jeff Wilson, Jr. for 14 yards, there wasn't much going on the ground early.
– Tua held the ball a little bit too long on second down with 4 minutes left in the first half. Durham Smythe got bulldozed by DL Micheal Clemons, who sacked Tua to kill the drive.
– Tua's end of the first half. A bad pick six on a ball that should have never been thrown breathed life into the lifeless Jets right before the half. A second interception gave the Jets the ball for one Hail Mary with 2 seconds left in the half. The second one actually managed to contribute to the Dolphins scoring points, as Holland returned Boyle's Hail Mary heave 99 yards for a wild touchdown. Still, it was a rough end of the first half for Miami's star QB.
– The fisticuffs between the teams that followed the Dolphins' extra point to push the lead to 27-6. Pushing and shoving turned into more than that, and an official ended up spitting blood after catching a stray swat by Clemons, who was ejected along with Austin Jackson. Never want to see that.
– Phillips went down with a non-contact injury early in the fourth quarter. He stopped moving and dropped to the turf shortly after trying to rush forward at the snap. He laid there as the medical staff came onto the field, surrounded by his teammates. He was carted off while in tears. The broadcast updated later that it's an Achilles injury. Just horrible.
– Tua and Darrynton Evans misfired on a handoff, and the Jets recovered. Not sure at first glance who that was on, but that's something that could be costly in a game that's competitive.
