The New England Patriots matchup against the New York Giants is two days away. So you'd think that the team would already know who the starting quarterback is.
Think again.
On Friday, Bailey Zappe spoke with reporters and revealed what he's been told about the situation this weekend.
And he was first asked if he knows who is starting.
His answer was simple: "no."
"Just be prepared to take every rep like it's a game rep," Zappe added. "And if my number is called to start this week, then it's called. If not, then I'm going to try to do my best."
This situation is an odd one, with the players on the team not even knowing what is going to happen. And when asked about what his decision is going to be, Belichick has repeated the same sentence all week.
“I’ve told all the players the same thing: be ready to go,” Belichick has said throughout the week.
Zappe was then asked how he feels about the whole situation and his answer gave nothing away.
"That's coach Belichick's decision," Zappe said. "So he makes those decisions and we just play football."
Mac Jones has served as the starter for the Patriots in all 10 games this season, but after he was benched in the Patriots loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Frankfurt, Germany, it seemed that his time might be done.
The coaching staff had been quick to reaffirm that Jones will remain the starter earlier this season when he was benched in two prior games, but they didn't comment after the game in Germany.
This week, Jones has been competing with Bailey Zappe and Will Grier. While Malik Cunningham is still listed as a quarterback on the roster, it does not seem likely they he will get a chance.
And Zappe's mindset remains strong.
"Same as every week," he said. "Preparing, getting ready for the game no matter what coach's decision is, just like every other game week."
It will be interesting to see when the players are finally let in on this well-kept secret.
Patriots’ Bill Belichick declines to comment on starting quarterback for Sunday
