Despite a rough performance in his first game as starting quarterback for the New York Jets, head coach Robert Saleh is not giving up on Tim Boyle, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.
Boyle was announced as the starter prior to their matchup against the Miami Dolphins, with Zach Wilson being benched. And to make matters worse, the former starter was moved down to third string.
However, it was clear that Boyle was not the answer as the Jets fell to the Dolphins by a final score of 34-13.
Boyle finished the game going 27 for 38 for 179 yards, including one passing touchdown and two interceptions. And there was one other concerning stat, as the quarterback was sacked seven times.
He also had one throw that went viral, attempting a Hail Mary at the end of the first half. The Jets had managed to get their second interception of the game, leaving time on the clock for just one throw. Boyle's long pass was intercepted by Dolphins DB Jevon Holland who returned it for a 99-yard pick six.
The Jets have had a string of bad luck this season after losing Aaron Rodgers 75 seconds into his first game with New York. They then turned to Wilson who Saleh continued to put his faith in despite his bad performances. However, he had finally seen enough.
Going into this past game, many had fears that Boyle would not be the answer based on one wild stat. His touchdown to interception rate, which goes all the way back to his time with UConn and Eastern Kentucky, was 12 touchdowns and 26 interceptions. Specifically at UConn, he threw one touchdown, but had 13 interceptions.
Boyle began his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, backing up Aaron Rodgers for three years starting in 2018. He then had stints with the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears before making his way to New York.
Behind Boyle, Trevor Siemian is serving as the backup. And it might be time soon to give him a shot as the starter.
