EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Bailey Zappe finally proved to be the spark the New England Patriots needed.
After Mac Jones threw two interceptions and recorded a strip sack in the first half of Sunday's matchup against the New York Giants, Bill Belichick turned to Zappe to start the second half.
And he wasted no time.
Utilizing screen passes, Zappe went 6-for-6 on his first drive of the game, throwing for 38 yards. With him in the pocket, the Patriots charged down the field for a total of 60 yards throughout 11 plays and it resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run for Rhamondre Stevenson.
This is the fourth time this season Zappe has replaced a struggling Mac Jones, but this is the first time he provided such a quick spark.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the plan all week had been that Jones would be the starter, but Zappe would play in a relief role if needed.
And he did just that, possibly doing enough to even earn that starting role.
Jones finished the game going 12-for-21 with 89 yards on top of the two interceptions and one strip sack.
Zappe went back out for the Patriots second offensive drive of the series so let's see if he can keep the success going.
