When Cleveland Browns special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone stepped up to the press table for his weekly press conference duties, he was making a statement both in clothes and in words.
He wore a brown shirt with Myles Garrett's image and name drabbed all over it. When he asked about the fashion statement, Ventrone smiled and made a proclamation that was sure to make Garrett gleeful.
"What this one?" Ventrone said while pulling at his shirt. "Best defensive player in the world."
Ventrone's claim isn't far off.
Garrett has been a difference-maker since the moment he stepped foot on an NFL field.
But his 2023 season is one for the history books. Despite seeing incessant double teams all along the line, Garrett sits in the top five in forced fumbles (4). He also has 13 sacks. And several of his contributions can't necessarily be tallied by conventional means.
The attention he commands can free up other defensive players to make plays at all levels of the Browns' defense.
Ventrone's shirt could be a step in the direction of campaigning for Garrett to win Defensive Player of the Year.
And hey, it is quirky enough that it just might work.
