The Houston Texans ruled out rookie phenom C.J. Stroud on Friday, obviously putting a bit of a dent in their playoff hopes as they try and slog their way through the final month of the season.
The question then became who starts at quarterback against the Tennessee Titans in Week 15? Well, KPRC2's Aaron Wilson answered that question early Saturday, reporting that veteran signal-caller, Case Keenum, is expected to start on Sunday. According to Wilson, Keenum's experience gave him the edge over former starter, Davis Mills.
Keenum is 29-35 as a starter. He's completed 62.3% of his passes over the course of his career and they've amassed 14,884 yards, 78 touchdowns and 48 interceptions. Overall, Keenum's career QB rating is 85.2. The last time he started a game was in 2021 with the Cleveland Browns. Keenum started two games that year and won both while throwing three touchdowns to one interception.
The 11th-year veteran actually started his career with the Texans. He wasn't drafted, but ended up starting eight games on a really bad 2013 team. Keenum then went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Browns, and Buffalo Bills before re-joining the Texans.
Keenum's most successful stint came in 2017 with the Vikings. He led the team to a 13-3 record after going 11-3 as the starter. He started the infamous "Minneapolis Miracle" playoff game and Minnesota made it all the way to the NFC Championship that game before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles.
That big-game experience is exactly why the Texans are rolling with Keenum over Mills. Houston is going to need every bit of his experience, especially after watching what the Titans did to Tua Tagovailoa on Monday night – even if Tyreek Hill missed a good chunk of time, it was still impressive.
Houston is right on the AFC's playoff bubble at No. 8. The good news is they've already beaten two of the three 7-6 teams behind them and they hold the common games tiebreaker over the Bills. Therefore, the Texans will still be in eighth place if they lose. Hell, they'll even move back into the playoff picture if the Pittsburgh Steelers lose, thanks to their dominant, 30-6 win back in Week 4.
We'll see if Keenum can keep things on track in what is going to be a tough divisional matchup on the road.
