7 takeaways from the Lions dominant win over the Broncos
Well now, that was a lot of fun wasn't it? The Detroit Lions flat out dominated the Denver Broncos with a 42-17 win that gave the Lions 10 wins for the first time since 2014. What a night. As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts: Goff Report Plain and simple, […]
Well now, that was a lot of fun wasn't it? The Detroit Lions flat out dominated the Denver Broncos with a 42-17 win that gave the Lions 10 wins for the first time since 2014. What a night.
As always, I have thoughts on this game. These are those thoughts:
Goff Report
Plain and simple, Jared Goff balled out in this game. There was a lot of talk about how he had a bad stretch and how he was going to head back into a regression. Those talks were warranted. Goff shut a lot of that talk down with one of the best performances of his career. If Goff keeps playing this way, the Lions can do anything they want this year. Goff finished the night going 24-34 for 278 yards and five touchdowns.
Defense
Where has this been? The Lions defense was stellar in this game. They forced turnovers, they got to the quarterback, they stayed out of penalty trouble except for one bad pass interference call. Most of all they kept points off the board against a Broncos team that's been playing really well as of late. They need to keep this up. Much like the offense playing well, if the Lions can play defense like this more, the Lions can do anything they want this year.
Break out the oxygen tanks
Who had Isaiah Buggs with a 37 yard fumble return on their bingo board? My guess is nobody. What a sack fumble by Iffy Melifonwu and the heads up by Isaiah Buggs to pick up the ball and then go for a run with it. You have to love it.
Jamo getting targets
Everyone with a voice has been complaining about Jameson Williams not getting targeted a lot in Ben Johnson's offense. Apparently Johnson heard the collective voices. He had five targets in the first half alone. Williams finished the day with four catches for 47 yards. His best game as a pro so far.
Safety blitz
Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn got creative on Saturday night. He threw a lot of blitz's at the Broncos. A lot of them were safety blitz's and they paid off. There was the Melifonwu sack from earlier and there was a Kindle Vildor hurry that turned into a quarterback hit. They kept bringing it all night and the Broncos just had no answer for it.
Melifonwu
Wait, that's Tommy Cutlet's agent. Turns out that Sean Stellato also represents Ifeatu Melifonwu and his brother Obi.
Maybe that's why Melifonwu had a huge game on Saturday. He started the day with a sack fumble on Russell Wilson and chipped in with a beautiful pass breakup in the end zone. Melifonwu also had 0 tackles. He's played very well since taking over for Tracy Walker two weeks ago.
Rookies
This group continues to just be special out there. Jahmyr Gibbs balled out for 108 total yards and two touchdowns. Sam LaPorta also came out and had a gigantic game with five catches for 56 yards and three touchdowns.
On defense we got good performances from Jack Campbell with 6 tackles and Brian Branch had some decent pass rushing. Even Brodric Martin chipped in with two tackles. What a day by the Lions rookies.
