NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans let one get away on Sunday, losing 19-16 in overtime to the division rival Houston Texans at Nissan Stadium.
But even after a tough loss and being eliminated from playoff contention, the result of the game doesn't seem all that important. For both the Titans and their fans, the health of rookie quarterback Will Levis is the only thing that really matters.
Levis was helped off the field with an apparent leg injury during the overtime period, and he provided an update to the media in his postgame press conference.
There was no brace, wrap, or anything else supporting Levis when he walked to the podium to address the media after the game. The rookie put on a brave face, but he did have a noticeable limp when he entered and exited the room.
Luckily, Levis appears to have avoided a serious injury. There's always a chance things change as the adrenaline from the game wears off and Levis undergoes further testing, but Tennessee's young quarterback gave an encouraging early update immediately following the game.
"I'm alright. It could have been a lot worse. It was definitely scarier in the moment than it was. We'll see what the trainers say, but I feel alright," Levis said.
Both Levis and Titans head coach Mike Vrabel were asked if Levis would have been able to return to the game had Tennessee needed him. Neither one gave a straight answer, saying that it was never under consideration because they knew the offense would not go back on the field.
Levis was not able to answer when he was asked if he felt confident he would play next week against Seattle.
Levis is expected to undergo further testing over the next few days with more details on the injury to come later in the week. The Titans host the Seattle Seahawks next Sunday, but if he's less than 100 percent healthy, it might be for the best to rest him.
Tennessee has proven time and time again this season that they are incapable of protecting the quarterback. The last thing the Titans need is a longterm injury to Levis that will effect the organization in 2024.
