If the circumstances were less pressing, Geno Smith almost certainly wouldn't be playing for the Seattle Seahawks in their Week 14 game with the San Francisco 49ers.

However, with the Seahawks on a three-game losing streak and at risk of suffering another huge blow to their playoff aspirations, he's at least going to see if he is capable of playing through a groin injury.

Smith injured his groin this week during practice and was listed as questionable after missing Friday's session.

It is described as a "two-week injury", according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Despite that, Smith is going to do everything he can to play, though Seattle is not expected to make a decision on whether that is feasible until pregame warmups.

Smith's desire to try to give it a go is both admirable and understandable, though his performance on Thanksgiving when he fought through injury against the 49ers suggests him playing again while not fully healthy is not a risk worth taking.

He was 18 of 27 for 180 yards and an interception and was under constant pressure from a swarming San Francisco defense. Despite the 49ers being without defensive tackle Arik Armstead, the San Francisco pass rush should once again cause Seattle significant problems. As such, this is not a game in which you want to be starting a quarterback with a leg injury.

The motivation for Seattle to play Smith, other than their desperation to win the game, is the alternative.

Should Smith miss out, Drew Lock will make his first start under center for the Seahawks.

Lock filled in for Smith during the second half when he suffered a bruised triceps muscle in the Week 11 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams. The former Denver Broncos signal-caller was two of six for three yards and an interception before Smith returned for the final drive.

There is no good answer for the Seahawks against the 49ers in this situation, and their coaching staff faces an extremely difficult decision to decide which of the pair of unconvincing options at quarterback gives them the best chance of pulling off a huge road upset.
