EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Bailey Zappe was asked many questions following Sunday's loss to the New York Giants, most of which centered around the current quarterback controversy surrounding the New England Patriots.
However, there was one very simple question he was asked regarding Sunday's game. And his answer was honest and direct.
One reporter asked the quarterback if he was pleased with how he performed overall during the game.
His answer: "No"
"I didn’t like the interception," Zappe said when asked what he didn't like about it. "That’s just bad by me."
Zappe replaced Jones at the start of the second half after the third-year quarterback had thrown two interceptions and had gotten strip-sacked once. Zappe wasted no time, leading the Patriots to the end zone on their first drive out from the half. But after that, they stalled.
And one of the worst plays came after Giants safety Xavier McKinney read the play perfectly, jumping in front of JuJu Smith-Schuster to snag the ball out of the air.
The interception was similar to the one Mac Jones threw earlier in the game, going straight into triple coverage.
"He made a great play. I’m sure when I go back and look at it, he did a great job, he snipered across," Zappe said about the interception. "For me, I have to see that, so that’s totally on me. I can check it down to (wide receiver) Tyquan (Thorton), he was wide open in the flats so when it comes down to it, it’s on the quarterback and that’s on me.
And with that, he was also asked if he felt that Sunday's game was a missed opportunity.
"100 percent," he responded. "When you don’t win, it’s a missed opportunity."
While he did throw the one interception, Zappe finished the day going 9-for-14, throwing for 54 yards. He finished with a quarterback rating of 20.6, while Jones had a 7.2 rating.
While Zappe didn't fully take advantage of the opportunity he was given, there will certainly be an even greater chance for him to earn that starting spot heading into Week 13.
Practice this week will be very telling.
