There wasn't much for Josh Allen to say after the Buffalo Bills (6-6) lost to the Philadelphia Eagles (10-1) on Sunday. Sure, his miscommunication with Gabe Davis in overtime hangs over the loss, but that wasn't the main reason they lost.
There were a lot of reasons and Bills head coach Sean McDermott should shoulder most of the finger pointing moving forward. Allen and the Bills offense played a great game and had the team in position to win with less than two minues to go in the game. It was McDermott and the defense that allowed the Eagles to drive into field goal position and make the kick to send the game into overtime.
And, it was McDermott who was more content with watching the final :20 of overtime run off the clock than giving Allen a chance to go make a big play to potentially win the game.
Either way, the Bills are now sitting at .500 on the season and they are currently 10th out of the 16 AFC teams trying to make the playoffs. So, not only do the Bills need to take care of their own business, which is already hard enough for them to do – they are going to need help along the way.
Allen is well aware of this and knows what's ahead. Fortunately, he also knows exactly what to say in this situation and did just that after the game.
"I'm extremely confident in our guys and the men that we have in this locker room. We understand where we're at, so we got to get things going," Allen said after the game.
Allen has to be sick of losing these kinds of games
It's another heartbreaking loss in which Allen had the Bills in position to win a big game, but something out of his control ends up handing him a big, fat L.
Allen seemed like he was run over by a Mack truck after the game. He wasn't short with reporters nor did he have a bad attitude or anything like that – he just seemed like he was over it. And can you really blame him?
Don't get this twisted: No one is saying he's throwing in the towel or is done with Buffalo. Not by any means. It's simply an observation and nothing more.
Allen just knows what lies ahead and how difficult it's going to be to get out of this hole. Especially when the majority of the problems start at the top in McDermott. As long as he's around, things are always going to be rocky. No matter how talented the Bills roster is.
The Bills could very well be 6-8 by the time Week 16 rolls around. Their next two opponents are the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys, two of the NFL's premier teams. Yes, the Bills can win those games, but as we've seen, they're unable to beat good teams. Unless they're the Miami Dolphins, who don't come back around until the final week of the regular season.
If the Bills fall to 6-8 then they can pretty much kiss their playoff hopes goodbye. Especially with the Dolphins on the rise and the finale being in Miami, where Mike McDaniel and co. are currently undefeated in 2023.
That's why Allen's sense of urgency is so important. The Bills have to figure out a way to turn this around, now. Because it won't matter how talented they are if they don't – they'll be sitting on their couches by the time mid-January rolls around.
