It’s hard to say what would have happened if the Carolina Panthers selected C.J. Stroud at No. 1 overall, with the way he’s played they surely would be more competitive.
A very possible outcome is that Frank Reich still has his job with the Panthers and he wouldn’t have been fired following Week 12.
It is an unkept secret that Reich wanted Stroud at No. 1 overall but the higher-ups had other plans. To this point, it is very much looking like the Texans got the better player.
In an alternate universe, the Panthers take Stroud and Young ends up with Houston. Carolina’s offense is not as good as Houston’s on paper, but there is little doubt in my mind that Stroud would have better results. Houston is a 6-5 ball club fighting for a playoff spot, while Carolina is 1-10 without a first-round pick because they traded it to draft Young.
Stroud is in legit MVP discussions and I’m not sure Young would be if he had gone to Houston. Stroud and rookie WR Tank Dell have built a chemistry that is going to hurt the league for years to come. Coming out of Ohio State, Stroud was the most pro-ready passer in the draft and Carolina overthought it.
This season, Young has just nine touchdown passes to eight interceptions. It is a different situation in Houston, where Stroud has tossed 19 touchdowns to just five interceptions.
Now, Reich has been fired for the second straight season, during season. He’s unlikely to have another head coaching job in the NFL and that may have been a different story if he got the quarterback he wanted.
Houston is in a good spot and they’re thankful it worked out the way it did. There is no ceiling on what Stroud can accomplish with the Texans in his career if his rookie season means anything.
