The Chicago Bears got a huge Week 14 win over the Detroit Lions thanks to a superb game through the air and on the ground by quarterback Justin Fields.
The Bears are continuing to play competitive football down the stretch with an uncertain future ahead for their starting quarterback.
However, for Fields, he plans to continue looking to make plays while letting the future take care of itself.
“I’m really just trying to be consistent, I think that’s the biggest thing,” Fields said last week. “You can play good one game, play bad the other. So me personally, it’s just trying to be consistent and trying to be better than I was yesterday.”
While the consistency is starting to be build for Fields and the rest of the Bears team, the team's starting quarterback was able to make some history on Sunday while also notching a career milestone.
With his team-leading 58 rushing yards against the Lions, Fields surpassed 2,000 rushing yards in his career. According to the Bears team website, Fields became the second fastest player in NFL history to reach 2,000 rushing yards and 5,000 passing yards in his career, trailing only Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Entering Week 15, Fields (458) and Jackson (644) are the only quarterbacks in the league who actively lead their respective teams in rushing yards in 2023. Fields also missed four games with a thumb injury earlier this season.
Since returning from that injury in Week 11, Fields has rushed for 221 yards, leading all quarterbacks in that span. Fields rushed for a season-high 104 yards in his return against the Lions in Week 11 and 58 in their rematch in Week 14.
In his career, Fields has rushed for 450 yards and three rushing touchdowns in five games against the Lions. During the win on Sunday, Fields also threw for 223 yards and a touchdown. His confidence on the field continues to improve each week and the similar sentiment can be shared with the rest of the team.
"If you don't have confidence in yourself, you have no shot," Fields said after the win. "We have confidence as individual players and as a team we have confidence. We know who we are as a team and we know we can do as a team. It's just not getting too high and not getting too cocky knowing that we have areas that we can improve in and we have to keep getting better."
