Sustaining momentum against lesser competition is a big test for the Packers

Talented young teams will win games they shouldn't. Eventually, they will lose games they shouldn't as well. And the Green Bay Packers have gone through this experience this season, beating teams like the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs, but losing to the Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders.
After achieving a huge win streak against better teams, the Packers will have a sequence against teams with worse records, and that's why their playoff chances are at 70%.
But how can the Packers keep their positive momentum? It's a mindset and a test to a young team, after overcoming failure, to handle success.
"We approach it the same way," Packers quarterback Jordan Love said. "We take one week at a time, we give all of our focus to whoever we've got that week. We give everybody respect, we don't doubt anybody. We don't take any game off or anything like that."
The first challenge in that regard is the New York Giants on Monday night. The opponent is 4-8, and with undrafted rookie Tommy DeVito at quarterback. But Love guarantees the team is focused to keep getting positive results.
"We don't need a reminder at all," Love added. "We know exactly what position we're in. Every game is like a playoff game for us. We know that mentality, we gotta win out. This team doesn't need a reminder of that."
The vibes around the Packers are much better now than they were a month ago. But head coach Matt LaFleur knows how fast this perception can change.
"You know you're only as good as your last game," the coach said.
The Packers have had three-win streaks in every one of the five seasons under Matt LaFleur, and they have achieved this once again. Now, the quest is for a playoff spot. And for that to happen, they need to win the games they are expected to.
Playoff scenarios
According to DVOA, the Packers have the second remaining schedule. And if they win out as Love suggested, they are guaranteed to have a playoff spot. With the Detroit Lions loss to the Chicago Bears, even an NFC North title is a viable scenario — 48% chance of winning the division if they win all of their next five games.
If the Packers win four out of five, they have a 99% chance of making the postseason, but the chance of winning the division is slimmer. Even winning two or three games, the playoff is still realistic, but more likely if they win the division games against the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears.
Other results over week 14 helped their cause. Two of the most important contenders, the Seattle Seahawks and the Los Angeles Rams, lost. The Minnesota Vikings beat the Las Vegas Raiders in a crazy 3-0 game, but their quarterback situation is not promising.
But even though the season outlook is positive for the Packers, the young team has to handle and overcome a different scenario. And everything is part of the process to develop the new offensive pieces the front office has put together.
