Pat McAfee made headlines this past weekend after people began speculating about his comment to New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
Kraft appeared on ESPN's College GameDay ahead of the 124th Army-Navy game that took place at Gillette Stadium this year. And the group of analysts took the opportunity to speak with owner and asked about his thoughts on the team's struggles this season.
McAfee in particular had a passing comment that many thought had to do with Kraft potentially firing Bill Belichick at the end of the season.
McAfee: "You've kicked a lot of ass in the NFL, Robert Kraft."
Kraft: We like to win, so we want to do everything we can to get our team back so we can be winning.”
McAfee: “I don’t envy your position. What’s about to happen. We all know. We don't have to ask."
The rumor mill has been buzzing with this possibility of Belichick's time with the Patriots being over and the team's current 3-10 record isn't helping the coach's case.
As the leader of the team, it's no surprise that he is receiving much of the blame, with the team showing a steady decline since Tom Brady left in 2020.
However, McAfee spoke publicly on his show on Monday afternoon, addressing all of the attention his comment has gotten.
“I understand from the New England perspective why they did this," he said on the PatMcAfee Show. "They were like ‘Pat just ambushed Robert Kraft.’ I didn’t even ask a question. They said I ambushed him with that and then we shook hands. And then they said Pat just told Robert Kraft that he’s going to fire Bill Belichick.
It’s like, I did not say that at all. What I was talking about was for the first time in 20 years, is he gonna extend Bill Belichick, is he gonna move on from Bill Belichick? And what about the quarterback position. What are you going to do?
I don’t envy his position at all. He’s a man who owned and operated the greatest dynasty in sports history. The most consistent dynasty… so when I said I don’t envy your position, everyone implied, Boston said that he just told Robert Kraft he has to fire Bill. Yo, you said that. I was talking about all the other… The internet just built a narrative about what I said.”
