The Las Vegas Raiders made a few moves this offseason, all orchestrated by Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels. We can say two of those moves were right for sure now that we are 14 weeks through the season.
The first one is Jakobi Meyers, who has easily been the second-best receiver and sometimes the best receiver and a breath of fresh air at that WR2 spot. The other is, of course, the second-best player on the defense – Robert Spillane.
Spillane was previously on the Pittsburgh Steelers but signed a two-year, $7 million deal with the Raiders this offseason, according to Spotrac. And let me tell you, it has been worth every penny. Not only has he been an absolute steal, but he has also been one of the best linebackers in the league.
And, even better is, he's making Raiders' history. Here is what the Raiders' PR team tweeted out about Spillane's record-breaking day on Sunday despite the loss to the Minnesota Vikings:
LB Robert Spillane now has 3.5 sacks on the season. Spillane is now just the fourth player in Raiders history (since sacks became official in 1982) to record 3.0+ sacks and 3+ interceptions in a single season.
The Raiders defense is much better this year than last year and has been really the only bright spot of this team. A huge reason why? Robert Spillane has been a turnover machine on defense and always seems to be where the ball is.
Going forward, I think it will be easy to build the defense around Robert Spillane and Maxx Crosby, two dudes who embody being a Raider better than anyone else on the team.
