The Tennessee Volunteers' 2024 non-conference slate is largely easy.  The Vols open the season with Chattanooga and take on Kent State on September 14 and UTEP on November 23.

The Vols' remaining non-conference game against NC State was always going to be somewhat challenging.  However, on Wednesday, it just got significantly more difficult.

Coastal Carolina QB Grayson McCall is reportedly headed to join the Wolfpack.

McCall is one of the best and most high-touted players in the transfer portal from outside the Power Five conferences.  He is the three-time Sun Belt Conference player of the year (2020-2022).  He amassed a record of 33-7 as the starting quarterback at Coastal Carolina, where he threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns with 14 interceptions.

McCall and the Wolfpack should fit like a glove.  NC State was a dreadful 100th in the country this season in passing yards per game (196.4), due largely to the shifting quarterback situation the Wolfpack dealt with between MJ Morris and Virginia transfer Brennan Armstrong.  McCall should give that number a significant boost.

The Vols and Wolfpack will square off in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, September 14.  That will be a return of sorts for McCall, who played at Porter Ridge High School in nearby Indian Trail, North Carolina.

Josh Heupel and his Volunteers will have their hands full to make sure that McCall's homecoming isn't a memorable one for him.
