Los Angeles waived DT Sebastian Joseph-Day in a surprising move that will allow the veteran tackle to join a contender for the end of this season. Cleveland should put in a claim for the defender, even if someone else ahead of them claims him.
Cleveland’s defensive line depth has taken a hit with DT Mo Hurst (pectoral) out for the season and the same news for DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, possibly. Bringing in a proven defender on the inside of the defensive line will help your cause.
SJD has started 14 games for the Chargers, has 31 tackles, and is tied for his career-high in sacks with three. Just a big human being at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds, Joseph-Day will add some of the size back to the defensive line that left when Hurst went down.
There is $7.5 million next season on Joseph-Day’s contract that is not guaranteed. Cleveland could just pay out what is left on the $6.5 million base salary this season and release him after the season is over. It is a move that makes total sense, then you try to bring Hurst back as a free agent.
Still just 28 years old, Joseph-Day is going to improve the defense line of some team that is heading for the playoffs. Cleveland should hope that ends up being them.
