The New Orleans Saints delivered a disappointing performance on Thursday Night Football. Their loss to the Los Angeles Rams was a microcosm of their struggles throughout head coach Dennis Allen's tenure.
New Orleans got in an early hole. The offense struggled until halfway through the second half. Important decisions turned into horrid, game-changing mistakes. There's a lot of heat from the fan base on Allen after the loss. That pressure has grown throughout a tumultuous season.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport doesn't think that Allen will be fired at season's end as things stand currently, though.
Of course, he is just one opinion/viewpoint, but he is a well-connected source throughout the league. If a firing was imminent, he would probably have an inkling of it right now. He said that the situation is 'subject to change', so it's not set in stone.
Rapoport mentions the veteran roster and Derek Carr's guaranteed season next year as two major factors for why they may choose to keep Allen around for 2024. Additionally, he mentions that a rebuild with a new coach, considering the aspects of the team, would be difficult.
He notions that their salary cap situation doesn't really allow for a full rebuild starting this offseason, anyway. Therefore, a new staff could be limited.
If that comes to fruition, it's disappointing. The Saints aging roster still has a lot of impressive talent that deserves another legit opportunity to contend in the NFC. They will not get that under Allen next season.
Not to mention, teams that hire a new coach is going through a 'rebuilding' type of phase in most instances. That's why they need a new HC. Those teams needs a new leading voice and energy around their players. New Orleans falls under that category.
Making more excuses to keep Allen, a coach with a 22-46 overall record, would just set the Saints back even further. They made the choice to give him another season in 2023 and let him choose his QB. That's blown up in their face.
Now, the Saints need to pay the price – literally.
Saints’ embarrassing loss to Rams should seal the deal for Dennis Allen
First, he did it against the NFC South teams not named the Carolina Panthers this season. Now, he's done it in the New Orleans Saints' biggest game of the year against the Los Angeles Rams. Dennis Allen strikes again. New Orleans entered Week 16 with a chance to skyrocket their playoff chances. With a win […]
