In 2023, the Las Vegas Raiders are still a bad team, just like they were last season. They are still a while away from becoming a good team that can compete for anything not named a top-10 draft pick.
The Raiders moved on from the prior regime and are heading in a new direction this offseason. What direction? Well, we still don't know. But what we do know is that Antonio Pierce has shown some qualities that owner Mark Davis might want in his next head coach.
Antonio Pierce has the mentality of a Raider, just like they did in the golden days. He grew up a Raiders fan and has been able to turn the locker room around in terms of vibes. All of those are amazing qualities, but he talked about something he was able to do with his team that could help save his job by the end of the year.
The Raiders got embarrassed by the Minnesota Vikings last week, where they lost 3-0. It was truly one of the worst losses in franchise history, considering the team was coming off of a bye week, and the Vikings were using their back and third-string QBs.
This week, they were able to put that behind them, go out, and score 63 points. That's an elite thing that only elite teams have, and Antonio Pierce described it perfectly.
"We talk about this having a short-term memory," Pierce told reporters. "I'm going to reference what Devote said last week. You know, it was on the wrong side of history. We're on the right side now, and that's the way we want to be. But, you know, it's like anything, you know, turnovers, points, they always come in bunches, and for us once that became a frenzy, right?
"And you saw it on defense, you saw it on offense, special teams jumped in it, just look at the sideline, you go to watch the game, you didn't see it, you could just hear it, you know, a lot of energy down there by those guys. So you responded, you know, four days after what just happened here."
That is a great quality to have when this team progresses and becomes a good team in the future. Usually, you only see elite teams and winning teams do that. You don't want to hear this, but that's how today's Chiefs teams are. They lose one week, and they win the next.
Patrick Mahomes is 10-1 the week after a loss. He has only lost consecutive games once, and that was this year. During the Super Bowl-winning years, their team always learned how to keep a short-term memory.
The Raiders have already implemented some of that with their team, which is good to hear if you're a fan of the silver and black.
