10 days ago, the Bills were a 6-6 team drenched in turmoil and outside noise heading into a road game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Today, they are 8-6 after defeating the Chiefs and dismantling the Dallas Cowboys in consecutive weeks, getting their season back on track.
If I had told you Buffalo would win both of those games, you would probably guess Josh Allen went off for 350 yards and four touchdowns in both games, and that Stefon Diggs caught 20 balls over two weeks to help drag the Bills out of the abyss.
While Allen made multiple big plays, and Diggs snagged a pass out of the air with one hand against Dallas, the Bills found themselves leaning on their secret superstar out of the backfield.
James Cook has quietly been one of the best players in football this season, and only since Joe Brady has taken over as offensive coordinator has he been utilized as such.
Cook is third in the NFL in scrimmage yards, behind only Christian McCaffrey and Tyreek Hill. Over the last two games, the Florida State product has 362 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, including 179 rushing yards and two total touchdowns against the Cowboys this past Sunday.
The Bills defeated Dallas by three scores, and Josh Allen only threw for 94 yards. Once the Bills realized that Dallas couldn't slow down their run game, they leaned into it didn't try to fix what wasn't broken. There was a popular belief that Buffalo wouldn't look to run the ball consistently, even if they were great at it, under Ken Dorsey. However, Joe Brady has made the run game a prominent feature in the offense, and Buffalo has reaped the rewards of that.
While the Bills don't have a solidified No. 2 target at receiver, Cook's emergence as a prominent figure in the Bills' offense takes a lot of the pressure off of his quarterback and star receiver. This offensive balance could be the key ingredient to the Bills going on a Super Bowl run.
