The Denver Broncos were just in a very weird situation, where with a win on Saturday over the Detroit Lions, they would be able to push even closer to making the playoffs, something they haven't done since winning Super Bowl 50.
But they fell short, really short, and in that game, viral moments happened, but not the good kind. The cameras turned to Sean Payton on the sideline after three failed goalline attempts to score, and he took all of his frustration out on Russell Wilson.
Their relationship has been weird, to say the least. Now, one NFL analyst seems to think that Sen Payton still doesn't trust Russell Wilson. And if you watched the same sideline video I did, it definitely seems like that is the case. Here is what the analyst said in a recent Power Rankings article:
The mid-game squabble was the big moment in the Broncos' Saturday night blowout loss in Detroit, and Sean Payton seemed to pour kerosene on the fire when answering questions about it after the game. Even though the Broncos' baptismal hot streak, winning six of seven coming into Week 15, most of the games were tight and tense, and it's never quite felt like Payton has welcomed Russell Wilson into the Circle of Trust. It felt like Payton took out his frustration over a tough penalty that wiped out a touchdown on Wilson, but perhaps it's much ado about nothing. What appears more concerning is that even with three winnable games remaining, the Broncos are on the outside looking in for the playoffs after being dominated from the second quarter on against the Lions.-Eric Edholm, NFL.com
He has the Broncos at 14th, which isn't bad, and in the last few years, this team would have only dreamed about being ranked that high. So, it's fair to say Payton has already got this team going in the right direction, but he still needs to get his trust in Wilson this year.
Payton is stuck with Wilson for as long as Payton is the coach unless that's past 2026. Getting rid of Wilson this year would cost $80 million, and next year it would cost $50 million. The first potential out on Wilson isn't until 2026. So, if he's going to be the coach of the Broncos, he's going to have to trust Wilson for a while.
