If there is one thing that is guaranteed for the Dallas Cowboys, it is that Jerry Jones will make sure they stay in the spotlight.
He simply tends to have a way with words.
More often than not the way he strings together words that are only used in a way that makes sense to him. He comes up with unique sayings that have come to be known as "Jerryisms" in the Cowboys community.
Recently, following the week 18 victory against the Commanders, Jerry Jones was asked about Mike McCarthy and his future in Dallas and his answer ended with the perfect quote to stir the pot.
"We'll see how each game goes in the playoffs," Jones told reporters.
After essentially saying it would be a game-to-game evaluation process, the Cowboys owner had to follow up the topic on Tuesday during his segment on 105.3 the Fan.
"I was a little surprised (at the public's reaction)," Jones confessed. "I don't know how I could be any clearer. Coach McCarthy is under contract for next year. So, that's not an issue. Secondly, I couldn't be more pleased with what he's done, and how he's coached. … I certainly haven't sat down here right in the middle of the playoffs and started talking to him about a contract. Why would you do that?
Basically, Jerry just admitted the obvious truth that he was in the heat of the moment and that McCarthy is safe for at least another year. He's not on the hot seat as of right now after getting the best play out of Dak Prescott's career and leading the third consecutive 12-win team in Dallas for a third straight playoff berth, something unheard of since the Jimmy Johnson days.
And yet, McCarthy being safe can cause conflicting emotions for Cowboys fans.
Some will be happy with the way the team has performed and be fine with McCarthy coming back. Others will come to say what Jerry was initially hinting at in his original comment. That is the only thing that matters is the playoffs, and if he can't succeed there, there is no point in him staying as coach.
I tend to be on the latter side of the argument, the Cowboys have had no problem succeeding during the regular season over the last decade or so, but their struggles rear their ugly heads coming playoff time.
The San Francisco 49ers have sent the Cowboys home early the past two years, and until the Cowboys can get over the hump that is the 49ers, they will be stuck in this state of limbo of being good, but not good enough.
