"One game at a time," is the cliché mantra for every NFL team, especially when it's playoff season.
Such is the case for the Dallas Cowboys, who will be hosting the rising Green Bay Packers in the Super Wild Card Weekend on Sunday. The Cowboys enter the game as large favorites but knowing their history, it shouldn't be seen as an easy game. It's the postseason, after all.
But as I pointed out in my article listing the top reasons why the Cowboys can win the Super Bowl, you and I aren't suiting up and therefore we're allowed to not only look past the Wild Card round but look at another outcome that could really benefit Dallas if it ends up happening.
You see, I strongly believe the Cowboys should be rooting for the L.A. Rams against the Detroit Lions and the reason is two-fold. Let's dive in.
1. The Cowboys would avoid a pissed-off Lions squad in the Divisional Round
Whether they're right or wrong, the Lions are still mad about the eligible receiver controversy that partly led to their loss in Dallas in Week 17. I have my opinions on the whole debacle, including that the Lions played with fire and that it's an enormous moot point when you consider the refs egregiously called Aidan Hutchinson's tripping attempt on the Cowboys the previous drive. If they get that one right, that's the ballgame.
The thing is the Lions don't care about any of that. Dan Campbell is a heck of a motivator and is one of the few coaches in the NFL whose movie-like speeches can really boost morale on a team like the Lions.
Out of the possible opponents the Cowboys could face in the Divisional Round, Campbell's enraged Lions are the one I'd like to see them face the least.
2. The Cowboys could see the 49ers knocked out in the Divisional Round
Speaking of avoiding top opponents, a Rams win in the Wild Card round would increase the Niners' chances of missing out of the NFC Championship Game.
I'm not saying I'd pick L.A. over San Fran, but other than the Cowboys, the Rams have the best shot among NFC teams at pulling off the upset. It's a divisional foe and it's Sean McVay versus Kyle Shanahan. A lot has been made about McVay's record versus his mentor but he did beat Shanny for a Super Bowl bid two years ago.
If somebody is going to take the Niners out before the NFCCG, it's the Rams. And if you're a Cowboys fan hoping for a Super Bowl, let's keep it real: Avoiding another trip to San Francisco would present a best-case scenario.
Although the Cowboys would really benefit from the Rams winning against the Lions on Sunday, it's not an easy task. Although the offense has been clicking since RB Kyren Williams has been back healthy, the defense is still a big vulnerability and the Lions (and hypothetically, the Niners) will be hard to stop.
The Rams are road 3-point underdogs against Detroit, a game which will be played on Sunday night after Cowboys-Packers.
