The offseason is officially here, and the Las Vegas Raiders have a lot on their plate in terms of some important decisions that have to be made going into the future. They can't get these wrong, and it feels like they could easily get messed up.
The most important decision is who will be the head coach in 2024. The players have all advocated for Antonio Pierce, the interim head coach who took over after Josh McDaniels was fired. However, he is being pursued by other teams, too, after his impressive turning around the Raiders locker room.
The Raiders have other candidates they like, though, Jim Harbaugh being one of them. Now, there is a report that if the Raiders don't bring Pierce back, the players will not be happy. Sports Illustrated's Hondo Carpenter, a Raiders' insider, broke it down in a recent column.
"[The players] will be angry [if Pierce isn't retained]. Furious is a better term," Carpenter said in his Q&A column. "That doesn't mean they will quit, but the Raiders have a great history of players who love the organization.
"If Mark Davis, for the second time in two seasons, goes against their wishes, they will certainly view the franchise differently. I want Mark to succeed; he is a good man. He has listened to many people hiring many coaches, and none of them worked out. Maybe this time, he should listen to his players. What does he have to lose?"
Pierce turned around the culture of the team – one that didn't have one, really. He made the team play harder, believe it or not, and gave them something to play for. I have said it once, and I'll say it again – he's a Raider, and a former player, so playing for him just means more.
After Maxx Crosby said what he said about wanting Pierce to say, and Davante Adams advocating for him, it makes sense to keep him, and it makes even more sense that they would be upset.
