This has been a pretty tough year for the Minnesota Vikings. Between injuries and the constant ability of this team to hurt itself, there hasn't been a whole lot of fun for a team that came into the year as a deep playoff favorite in a wide open NFC North.
However, despite all the bad, the one extremely bright spot for this team has been its resiliency and scrappiness in the face of adversity. These virtues have kept the Vikings within spitting distance of the playoffs for the last few weeks, and while it may not be easy, the path to making the playoffs is still alive.
The good news on this front is the team just made the right decision to keep those chances alive by benching Nick Mullens in favor of rookie quarterback Jaren Hall.
Two things are true simultaneously with this Vikings team; almost everyone has looked good for a stretch at quarterback and turnovers (specifically at quarterback) have been the main reason why this team fails.
Kevin O'Connell and his staff have done a great job of changing their scheme and getting new quarterbacks in positions to succeed at a rate that is only rivaled by what the Browns have done this season.
After Kirk Cousins went down, Minnesota has looked good for stretches with Josh Dobbs and Nick Mullens at quarterback. While both of these quarterbacks have put up remarkable stats offensively (895 passing yards and eight touchdowns for Dobbs in five games and 797 passing yards and four touchdowns for Mullens in three games), they combined for 19 turnovers this year alone.
That mark is simply unsustainable, even if the production on the other end is extremely impressive for career backups.
O'Connell gave both guys plenty of time to prove they could fix the biggest issue the team is struggling with. Neither could, and now the team has made the right decision to bring someone else in and hope he has learned from the mistakes of his peers.
The history of this season tells us Hall is going to find a way to generate passing yards. Completing 80% of his passes earlier this season for 101 yards against just one fumble is a decent start, and if you see that guys like Mullens and Dobbs can post ridiculous numbers with volume, you have to trust the staff can have Hall in a decent spot come this weekend.
The one thing that matters for the rest of this season is Hall finding a way to avoid the turnovers that plagued his predecessors. Assuming he can do that and the team shows up in the same ways it has in recent weeks, the last two games are winnable.
Even if they don't work out, the Vikings never had any choice. The head coach saw an issue and had to do everything in his power to fix it. Win or lose, this was the right choice.
Vikings’ season takes surprising turn
It’s an interesting, even though not shocking decision
