Aaron Rodgers is a New York Jet now, but he still clearly cares about the Green Bay Packers. During his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, for example, he mentioned "us" when talking about the Packers rivalry game against the Chicago Bears next Sunday, a game that is worth a playoff berth for Green Bay.
And, as usual, Rodgers didn't miss the chance to roast the Bears.
"It's the Super Bowl for the Bears just about every year, because they haven't been to the playoffs in for so long (since 2020)," Rodgers said on Tuesday. "We've won, Matt (LaFleur) has never lost to them, so nine in a row. Is it a rivalry anymore? If they can't beat us, is it a rivalry? Every coach that gets hired in Chicago, his first goal is to beat Green Bay."
Rodgers has a great track record against the Bears. Including the playoffs, he won 25 of 30 games against Chicago throughout his time in Green Bay. The former Packers quarterback knows the legacy started with his predecessor, Brett Favre, and he believes that Jordan Love can keep the trend.
"It's been rough the last 30-plus years," Rodgers added. "There were a lot of people who were like 'Favre is out of here, this young kid won't be worth a shit and then we had our run. Then it's like 'the old guy is out, this young kid isn't going to be worth a shit.' Now it's, 'oh shit, Jordan Love is pretty damn good.'"
The Packers have won their last nine games against the Bears, and eight of them were the last ones of Rodgers in the rivalry. In week 1, it was Jordan Love's turn, and the Packers won 38-20 in Chicago.
But this week's game is much more important for Green Bay. A new win over the Bears secures the Packers a playoff spot as an NFC wild card team. If the Packers lose, they would need losses from the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints or Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get in.
The Bears are already eliminated, but that doesn't mean they are not motivated trying to knock the Packers out of the playoffs. Quarterback Justin Fields always took his shot.
"Their fans are gonna be loud," Fields said. "Because there's not much to do in Green Bay except watch football."
Ownership
In 2021, Aaron Rodgers scored a rushing touchdown and shouted a classic "I own you, I've owned all my f***ing life" to Bears fans. After this year's week 1 game, Rodgers said he called Love to congratulate him for the win, and kept roasting his old rival.
"I said congratulations on keeping the ownership in place," Rodgers said. "That was pretty awesome for him."
Aaron Rodgers is now with the New York Jets. However, his serious injury after just four plays prevented him from establishing new rivalries in the AFC East. Meanwhile, the former Packer remembers his old days. And, well, even though it has split opinions around the fan base, Rodgers will always have a strong connection to the franchise.
