The New York Jets have already filled the open roster spot available after the team released running back Dalvin Cook earlier this week. And they didn't look far to do it.
NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Jets signed running back Xazavian Valladay to their roster from the practice squad. By doing this, they add two years, having him under contract through 2025.
While it might seem weird that the Jets are making a move with only one game remaining in the season and no possibility of making the playoffs, this is actually a strategic move.
"It’s the team’s way of getting a jump on the reserve/future deals we’ll see once the regular season is over," Garafolo wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Valladay went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, but signed with the Houston Texans soon after. He was released in August, and signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers two days later. However, he was released by the Steelers as part of final roster cuts, and signed to the Jets practice squad the following day.
He has yet to play in the NFL, but in college started at Wyoming before transferring to Arizona State in his final season. Valladay concluded his collegiate career with 4,466 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns on 841 carries, while also recording 88 receptions for 873 yards and four touchdowns.
This move comes after the Jets and Cook mutually agreed to part ways, with the running back going on to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.
