A rival SEC program received a commitment from a five-star recruit this weekend and it's actually good news for the Tennessee Vols.

2025 five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood committed to the LSU Tigers on Saturday.

Underwood is rated as the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class.

So how is this good news for the Vols?

Well, Tennessee wasn't in the mix for Underwood, a Michigan native.

Instead, the Vols are focused on landing five-star quarterback George MacIntyre, the No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class.

LSU is one of three programs, along with Alabama and Tennessee, that are considered finalists for MacIntyre.

But with Underwood now committed to LSU, it essentially means that the Tigers are out of the running for MacIntyre. That means the battle for the five-star recruit from Nashville will come down to Alabama and Tennessee.

There's a chance that was the scenario anyway heading into what's expected to be the final few weeks before MacIntyre commits (he's expected to commit in late January/early February). MacIntyre recently told On3 that while Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee are his finalists, it's really a battle between two programs (though he declined to name which two programs).

““I have always visited those three schools, but two have always stood out,” said MacIntyre. “It is a one-on-one battle between two schools and it is very tight between those two. When I pick between those two, the head coach will matter a lot. Then the family feel, fit within the system and the culture are other key factors."

The Vols have long been viewed as "in a good spot" for MacIntyre. And this weekend's news confirms that Tennessee will be in MacIntyre's final two.
