After Week 16, the NFL may have to get to the drawing board to make a new rule.

On Monday Night Football, Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson came in contact with a referee in a play that resulted in a safety.

Jackson was not tackled in the end zone but was called for intentional grounding when the ball did not reach the line of scrimmage. One has to wonder if the referee wasn’t there, would that safety have ever happened? 49ers DE Chase Young was in pursuit, though we don’t really know what the finish of the play would have looked like if the contact did not happen.

If a player contacts a referee purposely, it is a foul and a fine ensues. But if it happens accidentally, nothing happens. After this play, it is fair to question if the NFL needs to take a look at the incidental contact. A potential route would be to make it a replay of the down.

The safety was the first score of the game and the following 49ers’ possession resulted in a field goal. All in all, it was a five-point swing to start the game to give San Francisco the lead. In a matchup between two teams that are 11-3, the margin for error is small and this incident could become an even bigger talking point depending on the finish of the game.
