That was fast: The Dallas Cowboys are letting LB Rashaan Evans go after signing him in October, per multiple reports.
Evans only played nine games for the team, with 71 plays on defense and 79 snaps on special teams.
The Cowboys are waiving the veteran mid-season addition in favor of offensive tackle Matt Waletzko, who is being activated from Injured Reserve ahead of Week 17. In other words, the Cowboys are sacrificing linebacker depth for offensive line depth.
Cowboys: Rashaan Evans was arrested before being released
Now it makes more sense.
The Cowboys badly need offensive line depth entering the final stretch of the season as Tyron Smith nurses a back injury. His place has been taken by Chuma Edoga when out with an injury but Edoga has certainly not done enough to guarantee the backup role is his. Waletzko could raise a question or two about the Cowboys' plans at the position moving forward.
The Cowboys currently have starters Tyron Smith and Terence Steele at tackle, followed by Chuma Edoga, Asim Richards, and Waletzko as depth.
As for the linebacker room, it's as thin as ever: The Cowboys count with starters Markquese Bell and Damone Clark, with Tyrus Wheat providing some depth. The defense could always turn to Micah Parsons for help in a pinch but he's recently spoken out about why it isn't a good idea to do it often.
Moving on from Evans is a surprise but one that shouldn't be hard to comprehend. In his limited play, Evans had the third-worst run defense grade in the Cowboys per PFF, which was arguably one of the biggest reasons why he was brought in.
Cowboys: It might be time to double down on huge Tyron Smith bet
Worth the discussion.
