The Green Bay Packers are more likely to be sellers than buyers at the trade deadline next week. General manager Brian Gutekunst has never acquired a player via in-season trade, but he traded away two players at the deadline in 2018, when it became clear that team wasn't good enough: safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was traded to Washington for a fourth-round pick, while running back Ty Montgomery was sent to the Baltimore Ravens for a seventh.
It's already guaranteed that the Packers will have a negative record at the deadline. Even if they beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, they will be sitting at a 3-4 record. It's unclear if the Packers are comfortable or not with the current version of the roster, and how much Gutekunst would like to keep things are they are to give first-year starting quarterback Jordan Love a fair shot.
But the Packers have 12 players on expiring contracts — not considering players who'll be exclusive-rights free agents, because those are easy to keep if the Packers want to.
The most valuable piece is edge defender Rashan Gary, and he's probably not a tradable asset — Green Bay will most likely extend him with a long-term contract.
Other than that, every expiring piece seems to be tradable to a certain degree, even though some of them wouldn't have much value on the market.
Defense
- EDGE Rashan Gary
- CB Keisean Nixon
- LB Eric Wilson
- LB Kristian Welch
- S Darnell Savage
- S Rudy Ford
- S Dallin Leavitt
- S Jonathan Owens
As previously mentioned, Gary won't be traded. Keisean Nixon is actually a great trade piece if the Packers want to move on. He was a first-team All-Pro returner last season, but he's been average at best this year. Moreover, he's not a great slot corner. He could be useful for a contender, and he's the level of player who can realistically be dealt during the season. Ideally, the Packers would be able to get a fifth-rounder for him.
Regarding Darnell Savage, it would be hard to find a trade partner. He's not been a great performer, and at the same time the Packers don't have better options at safety. So it's probably better to keep him for now and let his contract expire. It's a similar situation for Rudy Ford.
The other Packers defenders with expiring contracts wouldn't have much value.
Offense
- RB AJ Dillon
- TE Josiah Deguara
- OT Yosh Nijman
- OG Jon Runyan
Jon Runyan has been bad as a run blocker, but he's a decent pass protector and the Packers don't have depth at guard. Moreover, they wouldn't move a starting offensive lineman at this point, especially considering how the unit has struggled.
Yosh Nijman is an interesting case. He's probably one of the best five available lineman for the Packers and should be starting. But for whatever reason he's not. He's on the second-round tender, and Green Bay doesn't seem inclined to keep him beyond this season. If he's not going to be more than a swing tackle, trading him would be a fair consideration. A fourth-rounder for him would be significant.
Running back AJ Dillon is a difficult case too. He hasn't been an efficient runner throughout his NFL career, and it's fair to say he hasn't panned out as the Packers hoped when they drafted him in the second round. But the Packers like him more than most others do, and they also like to protect and limit the number of touches from Aaron Jones. Don't be surprised if the Packers extend Dillon next offseason for reasonable money.
Josiah Deguara is a role player, and the Packers wouldn't find much value for him on the market.
The Packers are in a type of rebuild, so acquiring assets would be important. If they want to make small moves, expiring contract players is the place to look at. And, considering their pieces, Keisean Nixon and Yosh Nijman are the two most tradable players on their roster.
