The New England Patriots made two roster moves on Tuesday.
Along with waiving Malik Cunningham from the 53-man roster, the Patriots have also released defensive lineman Trey Flowers, the team announced.
Flowers signed with the Patriots at the beginning of August, but was placed on the Reserve/PUP list on cutdown day.
Flowers had returned to practice and because of that was designated to return from reserve/PUP. Yet, the deadline for him to be activated is this week, but the Patriots opted to release him instead.
Flowers began his career with the Patriots, being drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Despite spending his rookie season on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, Flowers had a 7-sack season during the 2016 season. And that same year he also helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl, recording 2.5 sacks in New England's comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons.
After his four years with the Patriots, Flowers signed with the Detroit Lions on a five-year deal, but was placed on injured reserve on his third season before ultimately being released. He then joined the division-rival Miami Dolphins, playing in four games there.
Across his nine seasons in the league, Flowers has a total of 161 tackles with 31.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in 79 games.
There is still a possibility he rejoins the team on the practice squad, but with the Patriots wacky moves in recent weeks, nothing is certain.
