Al Michaels is one of the greatest play-by-play broadcasters in sports history, but he had one of his worst moments in recent memory on Thursday night.
The Jacksonville Jaguars were driving for the go-ahead touchdown after the New Orleans Saints mounted a comeback that tied the game at 24. The Jags really needed a touchdown in order to slow the Saints' momentum and give themselves the best chance to win the game.
It didn't take long for the Jags to score their first offensive touchdown of the second half, as quarterback Trevor Lawrence hit wide receiver Christian Kirk for a short pass that turned into a 44-yard catch-and-run touchdown reception to put the Jags up, 31-24.
Instead of a thrilling call by Michaels, the veteran commentator thought Kirk stepped out of bounds, for whatever reason. Therefore, it was a boring, horribly timed mistake by Michaels that completely ruined the moment.
Michaels also butchered Foyesade Oluokun's pick-six that put the Jags up, 24-9, earlier in the game.
The Jags eventually won, 31-24, thanks to a big stand by the defense at the end of the game. Michaels displayed a lot more enthusiasm during that call, but it's probably more because the game was over, than anything else.
Michaels hasn't really been himself since joining the Amazon Prime broadcast crew and many people are noticing. Whatever is going on, it's hurting the moments like Kirk's touchdown the most and that's ultimately taking away from the game, which is never a good thing.
