With the NFL trade deadline right around the corner, things should pick up in the coming days.

The Cleveland Browns are 4-2 on the season and will be buyers at the deadline if they make a move. Making a move will happen if it checks all the boxes for the Browns. General manager Andrew Berry and the front office have always done their due diligence.

With Nick Chubb down for the season, and Jerome Ford out for a week or two, Cleveland should be looking into making a move for a running back. Not any running back, but Dalvin Cook of the New York Jets.

Since Cook arrived with the Jets, it hasn’t gone quite as planned. Cook has a whopping 109 yards on 39 runs this season with the Jets. The 2.9 yards per carry looks bad, but I’m confident he’s better than that. Breece Hall has really come to form as the lead back with the Jets, so Cook’s usage isn’t what he thought it would be.

“We all thought it was going to be more than what it’s been,” Cook recently said of his usage.

Now, to get Cook the Browns would be giving up draft compensation. Here is what I would be comfortable with giving up for a likely rental.

Browns receive

  • RB Dalvin Cook
  • 2024 sixth-round draft pick

Jets receive

  • 2024 fifth-round draft pick

If Cook is moved it is not going to be for much. He is walking in free agency, so the Jets are in a place where they should recoup anything they can. Here, I have Cook being traded for a pick swap. Cook signed a one-year deal with the Jets as a free agent after being released by the Minnesota Vikings. It is a deal worth more than $8 million, so the Browns would be responsible for about half of that.

“It’s something I can’t control, that my name is being floated around in trade rumors,” Cook said. “It might be a good thing, might be a bad thing.”

Cook is a seamless fit for the offense. He can add value in the receiving game as much as running the ball. The 28-year-old running back is a four-time Pro Bowl player from his time with the Vikings. In 2020, Cook ran wild for 1,557 rushing yards.

If Cook came to Cleveland, he and Ford would be the one-two punch and Kareem Hunt could be your short yardage back as the No. 3.

Right now, there is not any known interest between the two sides. But with Cook wanting out of New York due to his usage, the Browns should pounce on the opportunity.
