After suffering a 14-9 loss on the road in Buffalo, the New York Giants are now 1-5. There were some positives and many negatives in this Sunday Night Football game. The Giants put together nine whole points with two takeaways against a feared Bills offense.
Overall, New York needs to get a grip.
The Giants are injured on the offensive side of the ball, that is not their fault. They signed former New York and Arizona Guard Justin Pugh this week. Pugh was elevated off the practice squad to play around 25 snaps at guard. Pugh ended up playing 77 snaps with a majority of them being at left tackle, a spot he had played six previous snaps before. Not a player you need going against Von Miller.
New York has not scored an offensive touchdown since their Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. They had their best shot to break that streak at the end of the first half of the Bills matchup, but failed to do so thanks to Tyrod Taylor's decision to check into a run when Brian Daboll specifically told him to throw the ball. In all, it was a microcosm of the train wreck that is their 2023 season.
Furthermore, the Giants can not execute on offensive drives. New York had more than enough chances to win this game – they were dominating Josh Allen and the Bills. Towards the end of the game, when New York was down 14-9, they went for it on 4th and 8. Taylor threw to a triple-covered rookie instead of a wide-open receiver at the first down marker.
Lastly, the Giants have one dominating offensive piece, Saquon Barkley. They gave him the ball for a hopeful last-second touchdown in the first half, but not to win the game. New York gets a lucky defensive penalty called in their favor and moves to the one-yard line with one play left to win. Taylor throws an awful jump pass to Darren Waller to win the game, and in Giants fashion, they don't win.
Daboll is a fantastic coach, but not a winner, currently. As this is not entirely on him, it is Week 6 and the team is 1-5. This team needs something to change or luck because nothing is getting down in this historically bad Giants team.
