Titans validate themselves in the worst way against the Colts

INDIANAPOLIS — The Tennessee Titans (2-3) could have dispatched a thoroughly pedestrian Indianapolis Colts (3-2) team on Sunday. Instead, Tennessee squandered plenty of opportunities in a winnable, divisional road game en route to a 23-16 loss.

Falling to Indianapolis extended the Titans away losing streak to six consecutive games dating back to last season.

The slang term "mid" gets tossed around a lot in conversation these days. Defined as "to insult or degrade an opposing opinion, labeling it as average or poor quality," the phrase can be used to fit a variety of different things. Used in a sentence: The last four Drake albums, not just For All The Dogs, have been thoroughly mid.

In this case, Tennessee is the NFL's definition of "mid."

The Titans are a team, through five weeks, that seems to lack direction or a tangible identity. It isn't that they are out-right bad, but Tennessee certainly cannot be relied upon in any phase of the game that isn't field goal kicking. 1-of-4 in the red zone, out-rushed by over 100 yards (89 to 193) and a defense that allowed gains of 56, 38 and 26 yards in critical third-down situations felt like a personal attack on who this franchise is supposed to be.

“Frustrating," said coach Mike Vrabel. "You try to get on a streak and try to get something going and try to talk to them about the things you do when you win and try to validate it. That was the whole message, the entire week, was validating how we needed to play and what we needed to do.”

No one reasonable would argue that the Titans season is over six weeks in.

They are, however, validating much of the prevailing thoughts around them coming into the year. 16 points was almost treated by fans as an acceptable outcome, masked only by the atrocity that was Tennessee's defense. That the standard for scoring for this franchise has sunken to such depths speaks louder than anything else could.

The secondary continues to be suspect. Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill do not have adequate help in front of them. All it took for the NFL's fourth-best rushing defense to allow back-up running back Zach Moss to gain 195 yards from scrimmage on the day was a Jeff Simmons shoulder injury and the absence of Teair Tart.

The Titans are mid, until proven otherwise. At least you're the home team in London, though, right?

Titans corner Kristian Fulton having a disastrous start to his contract year

NASHVILLE — Tennessee Titans (1-2) corner Kristian Fulton is the last player remaining on the team's roster from its 2020 draft class. The former second-round pick will not be around for much longer if he continues the disastrous start he's had to the 2023 season. Unfortunately for Fulton, it is happening to him in a […]
