The main storyline for the second consecutive Sunday during the New England Patriots game was the benching of Mac Jones.
Bill Belichick made the decision once again to put in Bailey Zappe during the fourth quarter after the Patriots were trailing by a considerable amount. While he made it clear after last weeks' loss that Jones would still be the starter, this one seemed to allude to something more.
Following Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Saints, Belichick was asked if Jones will remain the Patriots starter going forward. And his answer was vague, but still gave just enough away.
"Yeah," Belichick said. "There was a lot of problems. It certainly wasn't all him."
Jones wasn't able to lead the Patriots anywhere near the end zone on Sunday, but the Saints had no problem with that. As the offensive struggles continued, New Orleans had managed to put 31 points up on the board by the time Zappe took the field in the fourth quarter.
So when asked about his decision to bench Jones, he turned the attention towards the score rather than individual performance.
"We were down 31-nothing at the end of third quarter," Belichick said.
And as for any personnel changes, the head coach said, "we'll do what we think is best."
Jones finished the day going 12-for-22 for 110 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Zappe. And those two interceptions made for an interesting stat.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, "Mac Jones' 1st-quarter interception was his 4th career pick-six thrown at Gillette Stadium. That is the same amount that Tom Brady threw during his entire career at Gillette.
Fans clearly were upset over the offense's performance, booing Jones when he came on and off the field. Zappe chants began during the game, and when the backup quarterback took the field, there was a loud cheer throughout the stadium.
Zappe reportedly took more snaps during practice this week, but a change in terms of the starting quarterback was "not imminent."
He has served as Jones' backup for two seasons now and has proven that he can handle himself in games. After Jones was injured last season he came in and helped lead the team to two victories before the starting quarterback was ready to return.
And with Jones also struggling last season, many fans began to support Zappe as the starting quarterback.
But, regardless of what the fans want, it seems Belichick has made it clear that Jones remains the starter for the time being.
