Wide receiver KaVontae Turpin, who scored the only Dallas Cowboys touchdown on Sunday night versus the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to miss multiple weeks due to injury.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Turpin "is believed to have suffered a high-ankle sprain in the loss." The insider added those injuries usually take four to six weeks of rehab.
The news makes the Cowboys' humiliating 42-10 loss to the 49ers even worse as it'll have a big impact on the team moving forward.
While Turpin shined on Sunday during his 26-yard touchdown grab that seemed like it could spark a comeback effort (it didn't), it's on special teams where he makes his mark as both the kick and punt returner for the Cowboys.
Last year, his efforts led to a trip to the Pro Bowl. This season, he was asked to step up on offense and his score on Sunday was a glimpse of what he can provide for the offense: Stunning speed.
An MRI is expected to confirm the injury and determine a timetable for Turpin.
His injury sets the table for sixth-round rookie Deuce Vaughn to step into the spotlight. The shifty running back didn't really return kicks/punts in Kansas State but has been considered the immediate backup since the offseason.
After a relatively slow start to his career at running back, Vaughn will get an opportunity to make an impact on special teams. Hopefully, he seizes it while Turpin works his way back.
