The New England Patriots are receiving a lot of criticism for their poor play over the last few weeks, but one NFL analyst had an interesting take to start the week.
Appearing on GetUp on Monday morning, ESPN's Dan Orlovsky gave his take on the potential that New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones has. And even mentioned one other franchise that Jones would thrive in.
"If Mac Jones was in San Francisco, he would be playing like Brock Purdy," Orlovsky said.
While former NFL coach and current ESPN Analyst Rex Ryan was horrified by the take, Mike Greenberg quickly agreed with Orlovsky's opinion.
"There's not chance," Ryan said. "He'd be better than he is, but you think he's going to play like Brock Purdy? You haven't paid attention to Brock Purdy."
Purdy, who is also known as Mr. Irrelevant, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. After Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo both suffered injuries, Purdy became the starting quarterback and did not disappoint.
He led the 49ers to the playoffs as a second seed, defeating the Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys to make it to the NFC Championship game. However, Purdy tore his ulnar collateral ligament during the game, making it so he couldn't throw the ball and allow the Philadelphia Eagles to run away with it.
Purdy finished his rookie season with 114 completions for 1,374 yards and 13 passing touchdowns across nine games. He also added one additional rushing touchdown.
This season, he is on track to completely blow past those numbers, with 98 completions for 1,271 yards, nine passing touchdowns, and two rushing touchdowns in just five games.
Oh and not to mention he has led this team to an undefeated record so far, sitting atop the NFC West at 5-0.
As for the Patriots, they are 1-4, with Mac Jones having been benched in the last two games. While New England has issues in every area, quarterback is a clear one with Jones' passes being inaccurate at many different times this season.
His best season came during his rookie year, with Jones throwing 352 completions for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, but had 13 interceptions. In 2022, he saw a serious decline which many blamed on former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia who was serving as the play caller.
New England then brought in Bill O'Brien this offseason as a way to remedy that, but Jones still is underperforming and it has led to many losing faith in the Patriots starter.
So far this season, Jones has had 105 completions for 1,008 yards, five touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Based on these stats, Orlovsky's take is an absurd one with Purdy having proven himself regardless of the team he is on. And while it is possible that Jones might do better under different circumstances, it's a bold statement to make that he would be playing the same as one of the top candidates for MVP this season.
If Jones should be compared to any current or former 49ers quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo would be a much better fit.
