Roquan Smith has opened up his 2023 campaign with the Baltimore Ravens on quite a strong note.
Smith has emerged as a do-it-all linebacker for Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. He has continued to blossom as a stout tackler and has also added another dimension to Baltimore’s pass rush. The sixth-year talent is on pace to set new career highs in both sacks and total blitzes this season.
Thanks to his potent start to the season, Smith now has a realistic chance of shattering a notable team record.
Ray Lewis owns the record for most combined tackles in a season in Ravens team history. The two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year winner tallied an astounding 184 total tackles in the 1997 season. He also logged 4.0 sacks and one interception in 16 games in the year.
Smith currently sits at 54 total tackles through five games played this season, and he is on pace to finish the year with 184 such tackles.
Smith does have the advantage over Lewis in that he can play in one more regular season game than the Pro Football Hall of Famer did in his 1997 campaign. Still, it sure would be quite an accomplishment for the former Georgia standout if he does end up breaking this record.
For now, Smith has his sights set on helping the Ravens get back on the right track in their upcoming Week 6 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
