The Dallas Cowboys announced a slew of roster moves entering Week 6 of the 2023 NFL season following a disappointing loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys are navigating multiple injuries across the entire roster and there will be more news to come. For now, here's a quick rundown of the moves announced on Thursday:

  • Placed on Injured Reserve: TE Peyton Hendershot
  • Signed from Practice Squad to 53-man roster: TE Sean McKeon
  • Signed to practice squad: LB Rashaan Evans
  • Designated to return from IR: CB Nahshon Wright

There's a lot to unpack but first, let me address the question that most likely popped up in your mind: Aren't Leighton Vander Esch and C.J. Goodwin also hurt?

To that, I say yes. The Cowboys are still expected to place their starting linebacker on IR and Adam Schefter from ESPN reported Goodwin's injury is season-ending. However, the team is likely postponing those moves as they simply might not need to open up a roster spot yet.

As for the actual moves, it's clear Hendershot's rehab didn't progress quite as the Cowboys wanted to. He was inactive for two consecutive weeks before the team decided to place him on IR, which will knock him out for at least four more weeks. Fortunately, his place will be taken by Sean McKeon, who also provides the special teams value as Hendershot. McKeon had been called up to the gameday roster from the practice squad each of the last two weeks.

Additionally, the Cowboys made the Rashaan Evans deal official. He's likely to be a practice squad call-up before eventually joining the 53-man roster. Evans provides competent play at LB and it'll be interesting to see how Dan Quinn eases him into the defense considering the level of urgency the defense is facing. Micah Parsons is likely going to pick up some slack at the position, especially while Evans fully ramps up.

Last but not least: The Cowboys have designated Wright to return, which is lowkey huge news for a cornerback group that lost Trevon Diggs earlier in the year. You just never know when the Cowboys could need that depth on the outside, as we learned on Sunday night when Noah Igbinoghene was forced to take the field on defense and was immediately targeted by Brock Purdy on a big play that was called back due to a flag.

Wright had a strong training camp and could earn a role as soon as he's activated to the roster later in the season. Of course, Wright also provides value as a specialist, something the Cowboys need badly.
