Sitting at 2-2, the Cleveland Browns have worked to do after the bye week. But they’re not going to rush the bye week as there are things to be worked on and bodies to get healthy.
It’s the defense leading the way with the offense far behind in terms of the levels they are playing at.
Four of the team’s five highest-rated players at the bye week are from the defensive side of the ball.
I like Pro Football Focus as a tool in player evaluation. It is a piece of the puzzle as to what a player exactly is. They do a good job of charting the data. I don’t look into their weights too much.
With that being said, here are the top five graded players for Cleveland with 13 games to go.
DE Myles Garrett – 92.3
Garrett is off to as strong of a start as he’s had in his seventh season. Garrett already has 5.5 sacks and is well ahead of pace to beat his previous season high of 16. In Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans, Garrett was good for 3.5 sacks. Another All-Pro level season is taking place for the star edge rusher
DT Maurice Hurst – 89.9
It was known if Hurst could stay healthy, he would be a contributor. As a rotational piece inside, Hurst is playing 38 percent of defensive snaps. The veteran tackle has 10 tackles and a half sack to his 2023 resume.
S Grant Delpit – 85.1
We are in the midst of a breakout season for Delpit. Outside of the Ravens game, Delpit has been playing at a Pro Bowl level player, maybe even higher. In his third season through four games, Delpit has 21 tackles and an interception. Cleveland’s top safety is flying around and making plays.
DE Za’Darius Smith – 83.7
The sack numbers aren’t there yet for Smith but they are going to come. Smith has six tackles and 13 pressures on the quarterback already. Cleveland’s No. 2 pass rusher has four hits on the quarterback.
WR Amari Cooper – 74.8
Cooper is the highest-graded player on the offense. At 259 yards receiving, Cooper easily leads the team and has one touchdown to go with it. If a bad whistle didn’t stop a play against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he would have about 40 more yards. So far this season, Cooper is getting open time after time. He’s playing a bit injured but it hasn’t slowed him down. On the horizon is another 1,000-yard season for the reliable wideout.
Jedrick Wills Jr. is one of the Cleveland Browns biggest problems through four games
He’s hurt the Browns pretty bad through four games.
