The Chicago Bears have pleased their fanbase even more just hours after winning their first game of the season.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the Bears are trading disgruntled wide receiver Chase Claypool to the Miami Dolphins.
The Bears will be sending Claypool and a 2025 7th-round pick in exchange for a 2025 6th-round pick. It's not much in return, but essentially all the Bears could get given all the drama surrounding the former 2nd-round pick they acquired last season.
The news comes soon after Bears general manager Ryan Poles blatantly closed the door on Claypool's potential return to the team while appearing on ESPN 1000 yesterday before the Thursday Night Football kickoff.
"I think Chase is going to learn from this situation, we all will, and I wish him luck moving forward throughout his career," he said on the pregame show.
The result finally puts all the drama to bed and closes the chapter of one of the worst trades in franchise history. Chicago gave up the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Steelers back in November to add what they believed to be a dynamic playmaker to the offense to surround quarterback Justin Fields.
"You're always disappointed in this situation, and it's definitely something I take ownership of," Poles added. "Last year, in the situation we were in, we wanted to add another receiver to the offense, not only to help us be more productive but also to help Justin take the next step. The right thought process was there, and I feel comfortable with that. Unfortunately it didn't work out and we were hoping for him to be a little bit more productive and be someone that could help us take it to the next level."
Poles is right, productivity just never showed up in Chicago, but the real issue is that Claypool quickly turned into a distraction for the team, not only in the locker room but in the media. During a tough period of weeks for the team, it's something that couldn't simply continue to be a problem.
Claypool was asked to remain away from the team over the past few days and was a healthy scratch in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos and again during last night's victory over the Washington Commanders.
All in all, Claypool ends his short tenure in Chicago with a disappointing 18 receptions for 191 yards and 1 touchdown in 10 games played. Miami will add yet another wide receiver to their already explosive offense as they look to continue their progression toward the top of the AFC conference.
